Who owns Alnwick Castle?
Alnwick Castle has been the ancestral home of the Percy family — the Dukes of Northumberland — since 1309. It is one of the oldest continuously inhabited castles in England and remains a working royal residence today. The current Duke and his family live in part of the castle, while other sections are opened to the public during visitor seasons.
Because it is privately owned, the family manages the estate directly. This is different from National Trust or English Heritage properties, which are held by charitable organisations and supported partly by member subscriptions.
Why is Alnwick Castle not National Trust?
The National Trust is a conservation charity that owns and manages historic houses, gardens and coastline across England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Alnwick Castle has never been transferred to the Trust. The Percy family has retained private ownership for more than seven centuries, funding restoration and maintenance through visitor revenue, filming fees and estate income rather than charitable support.
This independence gives the family freedom to create unique attractions you will not find at typical heritage properties — the famous broomstick training sessions, the Poison Garden with its locked iron gates, and the elaborate seasonal events that draw families from across the country.
Is Alnwick Castle English Heritage?
No. English Heritage manages over 400 historic sites on behalf of the government and its members. Alnwick Castle is not among them. Like the National Trust, English Heritage membership does not grant entry here.
If you hold an English Heritage or National Trust membership and are planning a Northumberland trip, you can still visit nearby properties such as Dunstanburgh Castle (National Trust) or Belsay Castle (English Heritage) on the same itinerary — just remember to budget separately for Alnwick Castle tickets.
What does private ownership mean for ticket prices?
Because the castle is not subsidised by a heritage membership scheme, all visitors pay the standard admission price. Adult tickets start from £19.50 when booked online in advance. Family bundles and combined tickets with The Alnwick Garden are also available.
The good news is that your ticket supports the ongoing preservation of a 700-year-old family home and its grounds. It also includes access to daily broomstick training, the State Rooms, the castle grounds and all standard exhibitions.

- Book online in advance — walk-up prices are higher.
- Look for family bundles if you are visiting with children.
- Consider a combined Castle + Garden ticket for a full day out.
- Check for seasonal promotions during off-peak months.
